Golf Swing Weight Calculator

The Golf Swing Weight Calculator estimates your club's swing weight based on head weight, shaft length, and balance point. This tool helps club builders and golfers optimize equipment feel for better performance on the course. Whether you are building a custom set, replacing a shaft, or fine-tuning your driver, this calculator ensures precise heft matching.

How Swing Weight Is Calculated

Swing weight measures how heavy a club feels when you swing it, focusing on balance rather than just total mass. The calculation uses the moment of inertia method, which looks at the weight distribution relative to a 14-inch fulcrum. This helps determine where the club balances and how that affects your swing tempo.

Swing Weight = (Total Moment / 1.75) - 30 + Club Adjustment

Where:

  • Total Moment = (Head Weight × Length from Fulcrum) + (Shaft Weight × Balance Factor / 2) - (Grip Weight × 4)
  • Club Adjustment = A specific value based on the club type (e.g., Driver adds 2 points)
  1. Calculate the distance of the balance point from the standard 14-inch fulcrum.
  2. Determine the moment for the head, shaft, and grip by multiplying their weight by their distance from the fulcrum.
  3. Sum these moments and divide by 1.75 to convert to the swing weight scale.
  4. Apply a final adjustment based on the specific club type to ensure reliability.

What Your Swing Weight Means

This number represents the balance and heft of the club, which impacts how you control the club head through impact. Understanding this metric helps you build or adjust clubs that match your specific strength and tempo.

Matching a Set

To ensure every club feels the same, aim to keep your irons between D0 and D2. This consistency helps you trust your swing on every shot without adjusting your grip pressure.

Adjusting for Speed

If you have a slower swing speed, a lighter swing weight around C9 or D0 helps increase club head speed. Conversely, aggressive players often prefer D4 or higher to prevent the club from feeling too whippy.

Important

Adding 2 grams of weight to the head increases the swing weight by one point, while a heavier grip decreases it.
