An at bat counts each time a batter finishes a plate appearance without walking, getting hit by a pitch, or hitting a sacrifice fly or sacrifice bunt. Reaching base on an error or fielder's choice does count as an at bat. This is why at bats are always less than plate appearances.
How often should I calculate batting statistics?
