How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your gross scores from 5 recent rounds of golf
- For each score, enter the corresponding course rating and slope rating (found on the scorecard)
- Click Calculate to determine your handicap index
- Your handicap index is based on the average of your best 3 differentials from the 5 scores entered
Formula Used
Handicap Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
Where:
- Adjusted Gross Score = Your actual score (for this simplified calculator)
- Course Rating = The expected score for a scratch golfer on a specific course
- Slope Rating = The relative difficulty of a course for bogey golfers compared to scratch golfers
- 113 = The standard slope rating used in the calculation
Example Calculation
Real-World Scenario:
A golfer has played 5 recent rounds on different courses and wants to calculate their handicap index.
Given:
- Round 1: Score 95, Course Rating 71.2, Slope Rating 125
- Round 2: Score 92, Course Rating 70.5, Slope Rating 119
- Round 3: Score 89, Course Rating 72.1, Slope Rating 131
- Round 4: Score 94, Course Rating 69.8, Slope Rating 122
- Round 5: Score 88, Course Rating 71.5, Slope Rating 128
Calculation:
Differential 1: (95 - 71.2) × 113 ÷ 125 = 21.5
Differential 2: (92 - 70.5) × 113 ÷ 119 = 20.4
Differential 3: (89 - 72.1) × 113 ÷ 131 = 14.6
Differential 4: (94 - 69.8) × 113 ÷ 122 = 22.4
Differential 5: (88 - 71.5) × 113 ÷ 128 = 14.6
Average of best 3 differentials: (14.6 + 14.6 + 20.4) ÷ 3 = 16.5
Result: Handicap Index = 16.5
