Pokemon Effective HP Calculator

The Pokemon Effective HP Calculator estimates how much damage your Pokemon can take before fainting. Enter your HP stat, Defense stat, and Special Defense stat to calculate your Pokemon's survivability against different attack types. This calculator also calculates both Physical and Special Effective HP values for comparison.

Enter your Pokemon's HP stat (1-714, e.g., 404)
Enter your Pokemon's Defense stat (1-614, e.g., 299)
Enter your Pokemon's Special Defense stat (1-614, e.g., 299)
Select the type of damage to calculate against
Enter type effectiveness (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, or 4)

This calculator is for informational purposes only. It provides estimates based on Pokemon game mechanics and does not account for all in-battle variables. Results should be used for general planning and comparison purposes.

What Is Effective HP

Effective HP is a measure of how much total damage a Pokemon can survive before fainting. It combines the HP stat with a defensive stat to show true survivability. A Pokemon with high HP but low defense may actually survive less damage than one with lower HP but higher defense. Effective HP helps you see the real picture of how bulky your Pokemon is against different attack types.

How Effective HP Is Calculated

Formula

Effective HP = (HP × Defense Stat) / Damage Multiplier

Where:

  • HP = Pokemon HP stat value
  • Defense Stat = Defense for Physical attacks, Special Defense for Special attacks
  • Damage Multiplier = Type effectiveness of the incoming move (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, or 4)

The formula multiplies your HP by the matching defense stat to get a base bulk value. Then it divides by the damage multiplier to show how much effective damage you can take. When your Pokemon resists an attack with a 0.5x multiplier, the effective HP doubles because the damage is cut in half. When weak to an attack with a 2x multiplier, the effective HP is cut in half because you take double damage.

Why Effective HP Matters

Knowing your Pokemon's Effective HP helps you build better defensive teams and make smarter switching decisions. It shows you which Pokemon can truly take hits and which ones look bulky but actually fold quickly.

Why Defensive Planning Is Important for Competitive Play

Without understanding Effective HP, you might invest in a Pokemon that cannot survive the hits you need it to take. This leads to losing key matchups and losing games. A Pokemon that looks bulky on paper might have a poor HP-to-defense ratio that leaves it vulnerable. Calculating Effective HP before training helps you make better EV spreads and team choices.

For Defensive Team Building

When building a defensive core, Effective HP shows you which Pokemon can switch into specific attacks. A Pokemon with 300,000 Physical Effective HP can survive far more physical hits than one with 100,000, even if their raw HP stats look similar. Use this to pick walls and tanks for your team.

For EV Training Decisions

Effective HP helps you decide whether to invest EVs in HP or a defensive stat. Sometimes adding EVs to HP gives more survivability than adding to Defense or Special Defense. The formula shows you exactly which investment gives better results for your specific Pokemon.

Effective HP vs Raw HP

Raw HP is just one number that shows your health bar. Effective HP combines HP with defense to show true survivability. A Pokemon with 200 HP and 300 Defense has the same physical bulk as one with 300 HP and 200 Defense. Raw HP alone does not tell you how many hits you can take, but Effective HP does.

Example Calculation

Let us calculate the Effective HP for a defensive Pokemon like Blissey with 364 HP, 130 Defense, and 226 Special Defense. We want to see how it handles a neutral physical attack with a 1x damage multiplier.

First, we multiply HP by Defense: 364 × 130 = 47,320. This is the base physical bulk. Since the damage multiplier is 1, we divide by 1 to get 47,320 Physical Effective HP. For Special attacks, we would use Special Defense: 364 × 226 = 82,264 Special Effective HP.

Physical Effective HP: 47,320 HP
Special Effective HP: 82,264 HP

This shows Blissey is much better at taking special attacks than physical attacks. The Special Effective HP is nearly double the Physical Effective HP. This matches what experienced players know: Blissey is a special wall but struggles against strong physical attackers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Effective HP value?

A good Effective HP depends on the format and role. In general, Physical Effective HP above 150,000 is considered very bulky for physical attacks. Special Effective HP above 150,000 is very bulky for special attacks. The highest defensive Pokemon can reach over 300,000 against their stronger defense type.

How do type effectiveness multipliers work?

Type effectiveness changes how much damage a move does. A 4x multiplier means double weakness and quarters your Effective HP. A 2x multiplier means single weakness and halves your Effective HP. A 0.5x multiplier means single resistance and doubles your Effective HP. A 0.25x multiplier means double resistance and quadruples your Effective HP.

Does this calculator account for abilities or items?

No, this calculator uses base stats and type multipliers only. Abilities like Multiscale or items like Assault Gear change effective survivability but are not included. For exact damage calculations with all factors, you may want to use a full damage calculator.

Can I use this for Pokemon GO?

This calculator uses main series Pokemon game formulas. Pokemon GO uses a different damage formula with different stat calculations. The Effective HP concept still applies but the exact numbers will not match Pokemon GO battles.
