INR Calculator
The INR Calculator estimates your International Normalized Ratio based on Prothrombin Time, ISI, and Mean Normal PT values. This tool helps patients on blood thinners like Warfarin easily monitor their clotting risk. Whether you are verifying a home test result, tracking medication dosage, or preparing for a doctor's visit, this tool provides a safe, standardized method to understand your blood health.
How International Normalized Ratio Is Calculated
The International Normalized Ratio (INR) standardizes your blood clotting time to ensure consistency across different laboratories. We use the standard WHO formula to provide an accurate result.
INR = (Patient PT / Mean Normal PT)ISI
Where:
- Patient PT: Your blood clotting time in seconds.
- Mean Normal PT: The average clotting time for a healthy person.
- ISI: A value that adjusts for different lab machine sensitivities.
First, the calculator divides your Prothrombin Time (PT) by the Mean Normal PT to get a raw ratio. Then, it raises this number to the power of the ISI to adjust for the specific testing chemicals used. This two-step process is crucial because it removes variations caused by different machines, ensuring your doctor gets a reliable score to manage your medication safely.
What Your International Normalized Ratio Means
Your International Normalized Ratio number tells you how long it takes your blood to clot compared to a healthy average. This score helps you and your doctor understand if your blood is too thick or too thin.
Understanding Your Ranges
- Standard Therapy (2.0 – 3.0): For most patients on Warfarin, this is the ideal target range. Staying here prevents clots while keeping bleeding risk low.
- Mechanical Heart Valves (2.5 – 3.5): If you have a mechanical valve, your doctor may aim for this slightly higher range to prevent clots on the valve.
- High Risk (Above 4.0): A result above 4.0 means your blood is clotting very slowly. This significantly increases the risk of dangerous bleeding and requires immediate contact with your healthcare provider.

Always seek the advice of your physician regarding your specific target range and medication adjustments. To stay safe, record your INR results along with your daily diet to spot trends before they become a problem.
