Ferritin Saturation Calculator
The Ferritin Saturation Calculator estimates your Transferrin Saturation Percentage based on your Serum Iron and TIBC or UIBC levels. This tool helps patients and healthcare providers quickly assess iron balance and detect potential health issues. Whether you are managing iron supplements, investigating chronic fatigue, or screening for iron overload, this calculator provides clear insights.
How Transferrin Saturation Percentage Is Calculated
Transferrin Saturation Percentage represents the amount of iron attached to the protein that moves iron through your blood. This standard medical calculation helps distinguish between iron deficiency and iron overload.
Ferritin Saturation (%) = (Serum Iron ÷ TIBC) × 100
Where:
- Serum Iron = Total iron circulating in blood
- TIBC = Total Iron-Binding Capacity
- Note: TIBC = Serum Iron + UIBC
Step-by-Step Calculation:
- Identify your Serum Iron, which is the total iron circulating in your blood right now.
- Determine your Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC), which shows the total space available for iron on transferrin. If you only have UIBC, simply add Serum Iron and UIBC together to find TIBC.
- Divide your Serum Iron by your TIBC and multiply by 100. This final percentage tells you exactly how much of the available space is being filled.
What Your Transferrin Saturation Percentage Means
Your result shows the percentage of iron-binding sites on transferrin that are currently occupied by iron. It helps you understand if your body has too little or too much iron available to function correctly.
Iron Deficiency (Below 15%)
If your result is under 15%, your body lacks enough iron. This often causes fatigue and requires medical evaluation to determine the cause.
Normal Levels (15% to 50%)
A result between 15% and 50% indicates healthy iron stores. Continue eating a balanced diet to maintain these levels.
Iron Overload (Above 50%)
A result over 50% suggests excess iron, which can harm organs like the liver. You should consult a doctor immediately for further testing.
Important: Recent meals or supplements can temporarily change serum iron levels, affecting accuracy.
